Butterflies for Barbra was founded and created in 2014 as an enduring tribute to her passion, drive and life philosophy,  Butterflies for Barbra has been established with the aim of encouraging interconnectedness between people of different nations through outdoor pursuits, and in particular the walking of the entire Heysen Trail as the primary goal.

What is Butterflies for Barbra?

It is a walking group established in memory of Barbra Cowan with the aim of collectively walking the Heysen Trail and participating in other outdoor activities, such as Color Me Rad. It consists of family and friends of Barbra as well as others who have joined in order to participate in and enjoy the outdoors.

Lynley Johnston first met Barbra early in 2003 when both were studying in Wellington, New Zealand. What started as a work association grew into a friendship through participation in many tramping, cycling and skiing trips. Barbra's enthusiasm for the outdoors and pushing people beyond their comfort zones was infectious and is the reason that Lynley is supporting the development of the Butterflies for Barbra walking group.

Jennifer Cowan, older sister of Barbra, has travelled within Australia as well as to Vietnam, New Zealand and South America to join Barbra on many and varied outdoor challenges. Jennifer, like many others, has been motivated by Barbra's passion for adventure and is keenly supporting the establishment and ongoing longevity of the Butterflies for Barbra walking group.
